Agreement to boost the culture of reading at Za'atri camp

Amman, March 6 (Petra) - LitWorld international yesterday signed an agreement with the "We love Reading" initiative with an aim to encourage and sustain a culture of literacy through teaching children and women at the Za'atri camp.

Under the agreement, the initiative will be to train Syrian refugees, women and children, on how to read aloud as well as to establish a number of libraries at the Za'atri camp.

The agreement was signed on the occasion of the "World Read Aloud Day," which falls every year on the first Wednesday of March.

Director of the initiative Rana Dajani said that the agreement will boost the reading ability of the children and women at the camp, and will give them hope for a better future.

"We Love Reading" is a Jordanian Initiative that was started by Rana Dajani in 2006. It aims at spreading the love of reading by training volunteers how to read aloud to children, and asks them to open libraries in their neighbourhoods. To date, the initiative has trained over 700 volunteers, opened 300 libraries in Jordan, and benefited over 40,000 children across Jordan. The We Love Reading model has spread to 15 countries around the world.

LitWorld is a non-profit literacy organization fostering resilience, hope, and joy through the power of story.

March 5th is LitWorld's annual World Read Aloud Day celebration. What made the day happen was a seven-year-old boy’s wish to share his new found discovery of the magic of reading aloud with every child in the world. He wanted to make sure that his global brothers and sisters could experience the gift and magic of story.

World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words, especially through a sense of one person sharing with another, and creates a community of readers by advocating for every child’s right to a safe education and access to books and technology.
