Syria expels Foreign diplomats in tit-for-tat measure

Damascus, June 5 (Petra) -- Responding to moves by Western nations, Syria announced on Tuesday it is expelling diplomats from about a dozen countries over the ongoing bloodshed in the Arab country.

Damascus said it declared diplomats of Turkey, European nations, the United States and Canada persona non grata, a week after their capitals expelled Syrian diplomats in a coordinated measure to protest the massacre of civilians in the central Syrian town of Houla.

A source at the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs in Damascus said that "some nations had recently informed Syrian diplomatic missions that members of their staff were persona non grata." Responding in kind, it said, Syria had decided to take immediate steps and declare persona non grata the U.S., British, Swiss, French, Italian, Spanish and Turkish ambassadors together with all Turkish embassy staff, the Belgian Bulgarian and Canadian charge d'affairs and all Canadian embassy staff as well as the German military attaché.
