Arab League team due in Ramallah on Saturday
Cairo, Dec 27 (Petra) -- Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, Egyptian counterpart Mohammad Kamel Amr and Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby will pay a several-hour visit to the West Bank city of Ramallah on Saturday.

The League's secretariat said the trip is to congratulate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after Palestine won a vote at the United Nations upgrading its status to a non-member observer state and to hold consultations on setting a date for a visit by Arab foreign ministers "in the next period." According to sources, Saturday's trip was originally scheduled for a delegation of Arab foreign ministers, but the secretariat had only received approval by Israel of the League chief and the ministers from Jordan and Egypt.

The sources said that during Saturday's trip, the team will discuss Elaraby's efforts to urge Arab countries to carry out their pledges to provide a "financial safety net" to the Palestinian Authority after Israel withheld tax money it collects on its behalf.

Another purpose of the visit, it said, is to follow up on a decision by an Arab ministerial follow-up committee led by Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister to hold consultations with the U.N. Security Council, the U.S. administration, Russia, China and the European Union next month to agree on a mechanism to relaunch Palestinian-Israeli peace talks according to a set timeline.
