EU Election Observation Mission deploys 24 long term observers

Amman, Dec. 30 (Petra)-- Following an invitation by the Independent Election Commission, the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to Jordan deployed today 24 Long Term Observers (LTO). The LTOs represent the second contingent of Observers, following the Core Team, which has arrived in the country on 13 December.

"The LTOs will cover all twelve governorates in both, urban and rural areas. They will observe the entire electoral process prior, during and after the parliamentary election scheduled for 23 January. The LTOs will be meeting government and electoral officials, candidates and representatives from political parties, civil society and the media" explained Deputy Chief Observer Dimitra Ioannou.

28 Short Term Observers and a Delegation of the European Parliament will join the LTOs shortly before the election. Together with locally recruited Diplomats the EU EOM will in total deploy on election day over 80 Observers from 27 member states as well as Norway and Switzerland. The EU EOM is lead by Chief Observer David Martin, a member of the European Parliament from the UK.

"The EU EOM conducts a comprehensive analysis of the electoral process based on a methodology developed by the EU over many years", said Dimitra Ioannou. "This analysis includes aspects such as the legal framework, the work of the election administration, the campaign activities of the candidates and political parties, the conduct of the media, the voting, counting and the tabulation of results, the complaints and appeals process," elaborated the Deputy Chief Observer further.

The EU EOM will issue a preliminary statement shortly after the elections. A final report - with technical recommendations for future elections - will be published later.
