Interior minister meets UN official on anti-terrorism efforts

Amman, Nov 14 (Petra) –– Interior minister Ghaleb al Zu'bi said Tuesday that Jordan had adopted preventive and awareness measures as part of its security strategy in its efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.

"Jordanians are proud of the level we have reached in combatting this plague, which took a collective nature involving our military and security institutions side by side with the rest of social segments, which have become aware of the dangers of extremism and its destructive impact on the future of the country and its generations", he said as he welcomed Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office.

The minister also said Jordan had been hit by the economic recession resulting from the turbulence in the region, asserting that the government is forging ahead with a plan to find "economic and investment horizons" towards recovery along with fighting extremism, which, in many occasions, feeds on economic, social and ideological exclusion.

During the meeting, Public Security Department Director General Ahmad Al Faqih said his security agency constantly seeks to improve conditions at the correction and rehabilitation centres, including providing vocational training for inmates that earns a monthly income for them and their families.
