King's deputy takes part in Jerusalem forum in Istanbul

Istanbul, May 8 (Petra) -- Deputizing for His Majesty King Abdullah II, HRH Prince Ghazi bin Mohammed, the King's Chief Adviser for Religious and Cultural Affairs and Persona Envoy, on Monday took part in an international conference on Jerusalem Endowments held in Turkey.

Prince Ghazi delivered a speech in which he thanked the Turkish president for patronizing the gathering and supporting the steadfastness of Jerusalemites and holy shrines.

He reiterated the commitment of His Majesty King Abdullah II, in his capacity as custodian of Jerusalem's Muslim and Christian holy sites, to continuing defending holy places on behalf of the Arab and Muslim nations.

Prince Ghazi said the Palestinian people is entitled to have an independent state on its national soil with East Jerusalem as its capital, including holy places. He added that the Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram al-Sharif remains a Muslim waqf and a place of worship for Muslims only, and it does not accept partnership, partition or negotiation in any way.

He indicated that this position has been recently confirmed by the 28th Arab Summit, the decisions of UNESCO and the decision of the Council of Middle East Churches in Amman in September 2016.

"But today, we are facing extremist movements in Israel. These movements are trying day and night to make gains in the Haram al-Sharif to make it a Jewish synagogue, as they did with the Ibrahimi Mosque", Prince Ghazi said.

He warned that the long-term objective of these movements is the destruction of the Dome of the Rock to build the so-called Third Temple.

He added: "They (extremist movements) are not ashamed to say it. These movements are somewhat restricted by Israel under constant pressure from Jordan and from His Majesty King Abdullah II." Prince Ghazi emphasized that Jerusalem needs support from the Arab and Islamic nations as a whole, citing a number of bodies through which support can be channeled to the holy city and its people.
